Eikev: The Erev Rav

It is not because we are righteous.

A somber #BibleStudyCoffeeTime
This week’s Bible portion continues. We’re still in Deuteronomy. Moses is prepping the Jewish people for entry into the Land of Israel.

As Jewish pep talks go, it is standard issue.

Lots of guilt!

Deuteronomy 7:12 – 11:25

Eikev Torah Reading – ParshahIn which Moses describes a land of milk and honey, recalls our failings in our first generation as a people, explains where bread comes from, introduces us to the World of Because, and refers to the …

Deut. 9:5 “Not because of your righteousness or because of the honesty of your heart, do you come to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations.”
“the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and in order to establish the matter that the Lord swore to your forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
In other words, Moses tells the people not to be so self-satisfied. They continually act bad. God is making an example of them.

God is contrasting what it means to be a Jew, with what it means to worship idols.

Deut. 9:12 “And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, descend quickly from here, for YOUR PEOPLE whom YOU have brought out of Egypt have become corrupt; they have quickly deviated from the way which I commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten image.'” (the Golden Calf.)
Now let’s stop here for a minute and consider God’s words to Moses.

“YOUR people.”

Why didn’t God say “MY people?”

Bottom line up front there is an explanation that is not clearly articulated in the text.

This explanation will help you understand certain Jews who behave badly. (Not all.)

What I am about to tell you has nothing to do with anything else you may have heard (like “fake Jews,” “Khazarian mafia,” “Synagogue of Satan” and so on.)

This is a JEWISH explanation.

To make a long story short, a group of people went out from Egypt that were not actually Jewish.

They were Egyptians fleeing the plagues, and they begged Moses for mercy.

The Jewish term for this group is the Erev Rav.

“The “mixed crowd” is an English rendering of Erev Rav.”

The Erev Rav pushed the Jews to create the Golden Calf when Moses didn’t bring the Ten Commandments in time.

The Erev Rav intermarried with Jacob’s children, but they never truly accepted Jacob’s faith.

But they are called…Jews.

They are fake Jews.

Exodus 32:4 “Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”

What Was the Golden Calf? – Jewish HistoryThe sin of the golden calf is widely regarded as one of the most disgraceful moments in Jewish history.https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/3613047/jewish/What-Was-the-Golden-Calf.htm

It is as Q said: “those you trust the most” — they need to be under the spotlight.
